APPENDIX: FRIENDSHIP PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH BELIEFS AND VALUES
1. We are a gospel-centered church.
We seek to believe, proclaim and embody the good news that in Jesus Christ, God is taking a good creation, marred by sin, and restoring it in every way, until at last all things are made new. The gospel is good news, not good advice. The gospel is not a way of life. It is not something we do, but something that has been done for us and something that we must respond to. The gospel is good news announcing that we have been rescued or saved. The gospel is news about what has been done by Jesus Christ to put right our relationship with God. Being gospel-centered means that we turn to the gospel, by its content and implications, to shape the whole of our lives, activities, and priorities, both individually and corporately. We seek to be a church that preaches the gospel unashamedly and which finds our motivation for service and ministry in the gospel itself.
2. We are an evangelical church
In addition to being broadly catholic, Friendship church also sees itself as part of the evangelical tradition that upholds the truthfulness of the Bible, the reality of sin, the necessity of personal conversion, and the call to evangelism and mission.
3. We are a reformed church.
Friendship Church understands itself as a self-conscious heir of the Protestant Reformation. This means that in addition to the creedal doctrinal commitments of the church catholic, Friendship traces its roots back to the Reformation and to the system of theology contained in the representative confessions and catechisms of the reformed tradition, such as the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Heidelberg Catechism.
4. We are a missional church.
We see ourselves as a city within a city called to love the city of Taipei. We seek to engage the city through love and confrontation. We demonstrate and express the love of Jesus for the world when we move toward our neighbors, seeking their flourishing in every way--men, women and children. We seek to be a church of missionaries, a church where every disciple is on mission to both declare and demonstrate the gospel. We do this through gospel intentionality in distinctive vocations as we seek to be “salt and light” to the world engaged in work and service to others that helps to make Taipei a better city.
5. We are a church that seeks to be a resource for church planting.
We strive to be a resource church for church planting. We are part of a small church planting fellowship in Taipei which has a relationship with Redeemer City to City. We seek to channel qualified church planters through the Redeemer intensive church planter training program who then plant churches in Taipei specifically and Taiwan in general.
