Thoughts on faith and life at Friendship Church

5 Questions with...Kate Camara

1. How did you first get involved with Friendship Presbyterian? I was finishing my masters in Language Education in New York City and wanted to try moving abroad. My close college friend, who is Taiwanese, and her husband, also lived in NYC at the time and they were moving back to Taiwan. They encouraged me to teach here in Taipei. When I arrived here, I really did not want to church hop, as I did in NYC, so I decided to stay with the first church I felt comfortable with. A former student of mine attends the Chinese congregation and she recommended Friendship.

2. What do you do Monday through Saturday? I am an English teacher and teacher trainer at a small cram school in Tianmu. I teach all ages, and I love it!

3. What is something people might be surprised to know about you? I am one of 10 children.

4. What do you find most challenging about being a Christian today? Actually, I think 2019 is a great time to be a Christian. It is so easy to start conversations about my faith because everyone is so passionate about being empathetic, understanding, and inclusive—all of which I see in Christ. The challenge, then, for me is to not blur the lines too much and become conformed to the world.

5. What is one of your favorite books of the Bible? I love the Psalms. I grew up in a Reformed Presbyterian Church that sings the Psalms exclusively. I have come to know them very well, and they are special to me.
